How Do You Measure Linear Feet Without Starting Over

To measure linear feet, record each run in inches and divide by 12, using the National Institute of Standards and Technology's exact relationship of 12 inches per international foot, then add the runs. A 10-by-10-foot room is 40 linear feet of perimeter and 100 square feet of floor; those two figures are not interchangeable. Square footage becomes a linear-material quantity only after it is divided by the material's width in feet.

The 10 and the 10 are already on the quote. Starting over is the expensive move. Salvage the dimensions you have, decide which quantity they describe, and measure only what is missing.

A meal-kit step card that lists 12 ounces of pasta and never names the skillet fails the same way a flooring quote lists 100 square feet and never names the plank.

What a linear foot actually counts

A linear foot, also called a lineal foot or a running foot, is one foot of length. NIST Handbook 44 (2026), Appendix C, states the conversion as exact: 1 foot equals 12 inches and 0.3048 meter. One yard is 3 feet, or 36 inches. The word linear does not invent a second physical unit. It tells the buyer that width and thickness are excluded from the count.

NIST Voluntary Product Standard PS 20 lists LFT and Lin Ft for "linear foot or feet." The Western Wood Products Association's Board Measure Equivalents table uses both spellings, "lineal (linear) feet," and defines lineal measure as total length regardless of thickness or width.

Thickness belongs elsewhere. WWPA defines a board foot as a piece one inch thick (nominal) by one foot wide (nominal) by one foot long (actual): thickness in inches times width in inches times length in feet, divided by 12. A 2x4 that is 10 feet long is 10 linear feet and (2 × 4 × 10) ÷ 12 = 6.67 board feet. Adding the 3/4-inch thickness from a Bruce solid-strip specification into a linear-foot total double-counts a dimension the linear unit was written to ignore.

Square feet cannot be converted to linear feet on their own

The dominant wrong answer on this search is a square feet to linear feet calculator that treats 100 as if it were already a length. Both units use the word feet. Area still cannot yield a length until the material's width or the shape being measured is known.

A 10-by-10-foot room has 100 square feet of floor (10 × 10). Its perimeter is 2 × (10 + 10) = 40 linear feet. A 5-by-20-foot room has the same 100 square feet of floor and a perimeter of 50 linear feet. Feed either into a flooring calculator and 100 looks authoritative. Order 100 linear feet of baseboard for the first room and 60 feet sit leftover. The 12-by-12-foot case splits the same way: 144 square feet of floor, 48 linear feet of perimeter.

How to measure one straight run

How to measure linear feet of a wall starts with the tape at the height the material will occupy: the floor line for baseboard, the rail height for a fence. Read the tape in inches, then divide by 12. A wall that measures 9 feet 6 inches is 114 inches. NIST's conversion gives 114 ÷ 12 = 9.5 linear feet. That 9.5 is the individual run length, not yet an order. A linear feet calculator from inches is doing this one division. It cannot turn a square-foot total into a length. Measure to the point where the material actually stops: the edge of a door casing, the face of a built-in, the post where a gate will hang.

How to add separate runs into a total

Write each run on its own line, then add them. A rectangular 10-by-10 room is four runs of 10 feet: 10 + 10 + 10 + 10 = 40 linear feet. Do not add waste on this pass. Cut loss is real, and later it comes from the manufacturer's installation guide as a percentage. The measured linear footage and the purchase allowance are different quantities. The salvageable figure is the measured total.

Gary Katz, a finish carpenter in Reseda, California, and author of Finish Carpentry: Efficient Techniques for Custom Interiors, prices trim as lineal footage. In the June 2004 Journal of Light Construction estimating column he walks a paint-grade job of 230 lineal feet with 15 corners, and writes: "If a job is particularly cut up — for instance, a kitchen or entryway with a dozen corners, columns, or end walls — I include additional time for those areas." The 230 is the length. The corners are why the order grows after the length is known.

How to get a room perimeter from dimensions you already have

If the quote already lists length and width, the perimeter is 2 × (length + width). For 10 by 10, that is 40 linear feet. For 12 by 12, that is 48 linear feet: the linear feet of a 12x12 room when the job is trim or a closed loop.

Flooring calculators spill into perimeter jobs because both start from length by width. The product of those two numbers is area. Twice their sum is the loop. A 10-by-10 room that needs oak and baseboard needs 100 square feet of floor and 40 linear feet of trim from the same two dimensions. An irregular room is a list of wall lengths.

How openings change the linear-foot total

Doors, gates, and built-ins matter, and their treatment depends on the item being ordered. For baseboard, subtract the finished opening where the base will not run. JELD-WEN's interior-door size list includes a 2/8 slab, 32 inches wide. Thirty-two inches is 32 ÷ 12 = 2.67 feet. A 10-by-10 room with one 32-inch door, openings excluded, is 40 − 2.67 = 37.33 linear feet of baseboard. A 2/6 (30-inch) JELD-WEN slab subtracts 2.5 feet. Measure the actual opening.

Windows usually stay in the baseboard total, because base runs under the stool. Crown often stays in the full perimeter. Fence fabric stops at a gate. Counting openings as full wall length is the error that shows up when someone measures the long wall in one shot and never walks the door.

When material width turns area into a length

Width is the missing vessel. Once it is on the spec sheet, area can be turned into a linear-material requirement:

Linear feet of covering = square feet of area ÷ (material width in inches ÷ 12)

Shaw Floors lists Paladin Plus, a Floorte Pro plank, at 7 inches wide and 48 inches long. One hundred square feet of that plank is 100 ÷ (7 ÷ 12) = 171.4 linear feet of plank. The 144-square-foot floor of a 12-by-12 room is 246.9 linear feet of the same 7-inch plank.

Mohawk's Solidtech installation guide specifies a multi-width pattern that alternates 5-inch, 7-inch, and 9-inch planks. The same 100 square feet becomes 240 linear feet at 5 inches, 171.4 at 7 inches, and 133.3 at 9 inches.

Bruce's unfinished solid oak, certified under the National Wood Flooring Association's NOFMA program and listed by AHF Products in 2025, is milled in 2-1/4-inch and 3-1/4-inch widths. One hundred square feet of 2-1/4-inch strip is 100 ÷ (2.25 ÷ 12) = 533.3 linear feet of strip, more than thirteen times the 40-foot perimeter of the same room.

Sheet goods use roll width the same way. Tarkett's CustomPro residential sheet specification lists a roll width of 12 feet (3.6 meters). In theory, 100 square feet of floor is 100 ÷ 12 = 8.33 linear feet of 12-foot-wide goods. A 10-by-10 room is only 10 feet across, so a 12-foot roll laid across it spends 10 linear feet of roll and leaves a 2-foot side strip. That extra 20 square feet of width waste never appears if the takeoff stops at 8.33. No square-feet-to-linear-feet calculator is complete until that width is typed in.

Keep measured length and purchase allowance as two numbers

Cut waste is real. It is not a second measurement of the room.

Manufacturer installation guides disagree on the percentage, because layout and fastening method change the offcuts. Mohawk's engineered-hardwood instructions tell the buyer to purchase an additional 5 percent for cuts, and 10 percent if the floor is installed diagonally. Mohawk's rigid-plank instructions, a different document, tell the buyer to add 10 percent for standard installations and 15 percent for diagonal. Shaw's Paladin Plus product page runs a room calculator that adds 15 percent "to cover installation errors or other unforeseen circumstances." AHF Products' Robbins 3/4-inch solid-wood instructions require 5 percent for cutting and grading, 10 percent for diagonal, and 10 to 15 percent for glue-down. Those figures are not a universal rate. Apply the guide that matches the SKU. Leave the measured 37.33 linear feet of baseboard, or the 100 square feet of floor, visible so a later salvage does not have to reverse-engineer the waste.

Then round up to stock lengths. Thirty-seven linear feet of measured base, plus 10 percent, is 40.9 feet: six 8-foot boards (48 feet purchased). The purchase is 48. The job is still 37.33. A 40-linear-foot fence line is 40 feet of run; forty linear feet of 7-inch plank covers 40 × (7 ÷ 12) = 23.3 square feet of floor.

The dimensions on the existing quote are almost never the problem. Name the vessel they were meant to fill, convert only after that width is on the spec sheet, and the takeoff that looked unusable is the takeoff that still works.
